Chronology of Major Choir Events
1974 – Morgan State University Choir’s first international tour to Helsinki, London, Copenhagen and Leningrad at the request of conductor Paul Freeman. Choir performs with the Helsinki Philharmonic.
1977 – Choir performs at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic performing works of Black Composers
1990 – USIA tour of Eastern Africa – Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Mauritius, and Madagascar
1992 – Choir performs for the 1992 International Beethoven Festival in Bonn, Germany.
1993 – Premiere of Too Hot to Handle with Marin Alsop and the Concordia Symphony Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.
1994 - Canary Islands – choir performs Porgy and Bess with Paul Freeman and the Chicago Sinfionetta.
1995 – Choir records Hanibal Peterson’s African Portraits with Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Barenboim
March 1995 –Choir performs John Corrigiliano’s Poem on His Birthday at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra
1995 – Choir sings with Kathleen Battle on rededication of Kennedy Center Concert Hall
1996 – MPT, Emmy Award Winning Silver Anniversary taped and aired celebrating 25 years of Nathan Carter at the helm of the Morgan State University Choir
1997 – Porgy & Bess, Paul Freeman Germany – Chicago Infinite
1997 –Choir records Phillips Glass’ – Civil War Dennis Russell Davies
1997- 100th Birthday Tribute to Marian Anderson with Robert Shaw and Orchestra of St. Luks Sylvia McNair, jess Norman, Florence Quivar, Denise Graves Carnegie Hall
1997 - “Too Hot to Handel” premieres in Carnegie Hall with Marin Alsop and the Concordia Orchestra
SUMMER 1998 – PBS special Glorious Gospel in Performance at the White House, hosted by Ce-CE Winans
Summer 2000 – Choir’s first tour of Prague – performing Porgy and Bess with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.
1999-2000 Season – performed a premiere of Wynton Marsalis “All Rise” with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Kurt Mazur
Summer 2003 – Choir returns to Czech Republic for a 3-week tour.
2003 – Recorded All-Rise in Paris with Wynton Marsalis and Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble.
January 2004 – performed Porgy and Bess with Yuri Temirkanov in the St. Petersburg Winter Festival
2004 – Named “America’s Best College Choir in America” by Reader’s Digest Magazine
January 2005 – Choir sings Mendelssohn’s Symphony #2 with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
February 2005 – Choir sings at National ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda celebrating the life of Civil Rights matriarch, Rosa Parks
April 8-10, 2005 - Departmental Musical - RAISIN - The Musical
June, 2005 - Choir performs in Prague, Czech Republic with National Czech orchestra, under the direction of Paul Freeman.
February 2006 – Choir Sings for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for the US State Department’s African American History Month Celebration
March 2006 – Choir sings perform in New Orleans for special benefit concert for victims of Katrina
March 30- April 2, 2006 - Departmental Production of Ragtime
May 2006 - Choir performs at Kennedy Center for Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival with Billy Taylor and Dave Brubeck
March 2007 – Perform at University of Virgin Islands, St. Croix and Tortola
June 2007 – Choir performs in Ghana at the invitation of Pamela Bridgewater for the country’s 50 anniversary of their independence
April 2008 – Choir performs Faure Requiem with St. Lukes Orchestra under the direction of Booby McFerrin at Carnegie Hall!
October 2008 – the choir performs in Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center with Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performing Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. These performances were recorded and nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album.
November 2008 - the choir performs with grammy-award winning artist Faith Hill at Rockefeller Center and the David Letterman show.
April 3-5, 2009 - Departmental production of Sarafina!
July 2009 – Choir tours South Africa and sings for Nelson Mandela on National Television Station
May 2010 – performs with Kathleen and Battle and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
June 2010 – Choir tours China, including Beijing, Tiajin, Xi’an, and Shanghai. Choir performs at 2010 Shanghai World Expo
July 2010 – Choir performs in Medellin, Colombia
October 2010 – Choir performs for International Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia
June 2011- Choir tours Italy! With destinations in Rome, Pisa, & Florence! Performed in at a Mass at the Vatican
March 29- April 1, 2012 - Full cast production of Porgy and Bess at Murphy Fine Arts Center - featuring Kevin Short, and Kishna Davis
March/April 2012 - Morgan presents the full opera Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin
June 2012 - Choir tours Rio de Janerio, Brazil
July 2012- Choir is invited to sing for the 25th anniversary of the independence of Jamaica in Kingston!
April 11-14, 2013 - Departmental Production of Color Purple
June 2013 - Choir travels to Sydney & Melbourne Australia
May 2014 - Choir travels to Qatar, Oman, and United Arab Erimates
June 2014 - Choir travels to Belarus and Montenegro
April 2015 – Choir sings with Shirley Caesar, Lyle Lovett, Aretha Franklin and Tamela Mann, during the nationally televised telecast Live at the White Series at the invitation of Michelle Obama.
May 2015 - Choir travels to Argentina
May 2016 - Choir tours Cuba!
February 2016 - Performs with Wynton Marsalis and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in “All Rise”
March 31-April 2, 2013 - Departmental Production of THE WIZ celebrating 10th anniversary of the Murphy Fine Arts Center!
May 2017 - Choir tours Spain and Portugal!
June 2017 - Members of the choir accompany Angelique Kidro and Kesha at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC
May 2018 - Choir tours Austria, Slovakia, and Germany. One of the highlights was a performance in St. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna, Austria!
May 2019 - Choir tours Scotland, Wales and England
December 7, 2021 - Choir sings at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor!
May 2022 - Choir tours Peru, Ecuador, and Galapagos Islands!
May 2023 - Choir performs Beethoven 9 with Philadelphia Orchestra with Morgan alums Leah Hawkins, Issachah Savage, and Kevin Short as soloists!
May 2023 - Choir tours West African Countries of Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria!
